With
our resident tips guru STUART GIPP |
It's
been exactly twelve years since the blue bomber struck out onto
UK newsagents everywhere, and he's been making waves ever since!
Our Q-Zone man Stuart Gipp takes a look at where Sonic's been and
where he's going...
|
It's
fairly obvious that if you're reading this, you're a Sonic fan. Sure,
it's likely that you know all there is to know about the blue hedgehog
but a little nostalgia never hurt anyone, did it? I mean, look back
on what Sonic and his friends have achieved over the years - they've
been to mountains packed with scorching lava (Sonic 2, Hill Top zone),
submerged pyramids filled with terrifying ghosts (Sonic and Knuckles,
Sandopolis zone) and even deep space on many occasions (Sonic 2/Sonic
and Knuckles, Death Egg zone). They've tried their hand at everything
- running (Sonic R), driving (Sonic Drift 1 & 2) and even one-on-one
fighting (Sonic the Fighters). But where can they go next?
As we already know, Shadow's off on his own separate
adventure, the details of which he is very reluctant to divulge.
Even double helpings of Auntie Megadroid's world famous cream crackers
wouldn't sway him. Sonic's apparently running into trouble with
a parallel dimension and someone called Blaze the Cat - we'll have
to ask him about it when he gets back.
People may ask "What about Tails, Amy and the rest of the gang?"
In all fairness, I think the guys deserve a break! I mean, it's
not as if Tails has had anything less than his fair share of adventures.
He's battled an evil witch (Tails' Sky Patrol) and journeyed through
Poloy Forest and other lost areas of South Island (Tails' Adventure).
The rest of the gang haven't exactly been shy on excitement either.
Knuckles teamed up with Vector, Espio, Mighty, Charmy, Heavy and
Bomb to shut down the diabolical Project Chaotix (Knuckles Chaotix)
and Amy has been relentless in her attempts to snag Sonic for herself,
following him into outer space and back.
Sonic has also made a few new friends (and foes) since those days.
The seductive jewel thief Rouge the Bat, cute Cream the Rabbit and
her best pal Cheese the Chao are just two of many newer faces in
Sonic's world.
Despite
having been a part of the national consciousness for over a decade,
Sonic's popularity continues to increase. Even in another decade's
time, the spiky blue rodent will just keep on running. And we'll
be right there trying to keep up.

Advance 3 (Gameboy Advance) |
|
The
Megadroid went a bit haywire when he received this code… he
hoped it would help him acquire those confounded Special Keys and
blew a circuit when he found out that you had to already have collected
them in order for the code to function! But fear not, Boomers - It's
still a nifty cheat!
Once you've beaten
the secret level (No spoilers here, Boomers!) simply return to the
main menu and enter UP, R, DOWN, L, RIGHT, LEFT. Special Stage mode
will appear! Wing walk to your heart's content!

Sonic
Heroes (Playstation 2) |
You'll
need a friend for this one. Unless, of course, you like to play multiplayer
games by yourself, thus ensuring you win every time. Each to their
own. Anyway, when beginning a two-player game, after selecting your
team and level, hold TRIANGLE and X during the loading. Your team
will have funky metallic skin! Don't they worry about rust, these
animals? |
Sonic
Mega Collection Plus (Playstation 2/XBOX) |
A
couple of quick tips for this collection - to unlock the hidden games
"Comix Zone" and "The Ooze", you must have a Sonic
Heroes game save present on your Memory Card or HD.
Additionally, 3 hours of continuous play on any game will unlock game-specific
hints and tips.

Sonic
the Hedgehog 3 (Megadrive) |
Here's
a funky little retro present for you loyal Boomers. This one's less
of a cheat than an interesting glitch, and it requires a little effort
on your part. First, go to Hydrocity Zone, Act 1. That's the second
zone for the dozy ones. Now make your way to the boss (I call it Robotnik's
Washing Machine) and stand in the centre of the arena, remaining submerged
at all times. Just wait. Never allow yourself to surface from the
water. The boss can smack you around, but be sure you never die or
surface. You can avoid death by grabbing a ring each time. It may
also hep to enter the arena as Super Sonic, but that involves grabbing
all seven emeralds. In any case, after too long underwater, a frantic
countdown will start with some suitable panic music. Don't panic,
Boomers! Stay right where you are and wait for that countdown to come
to a halt, along with the music. Just before Sonic drowns, leap out
of the water and gasp for air. The backing music changes to the Sonic
and Knuckles boss battle music! Explanation? Sonic 3 and Sonic and
Knuckles were originally intended to be one epic game, but consumer
demand and pressure meant Sega released both games separately instead.
Makes for a fun little trick, though.
