Q. What are the question marks on the menu screen?

These are the unlockable games - Blue Sphere, Sonic 2 and Knuckles, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Flick and, Ristar. These are made available by racking up 50 plays on each of the previous games… no problem to a true Sonic fan!
Q. Are the old level select cheats still in there?
They certainly are! Just in case you STILL don't know them (And where have you been, Boomers?) here are the level select cheats for Sonic 1, 2 and 3.

For Sonic 1, Wait for Sonic to begin wagging his finger on the title screen, then press UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT. You will hear a chiming sound. After this, hold the (B) button and press START to access the level select.

For Sonic 2, press DOWN, DOWN on the title screen to access the options menu. From here, play sounds 19, 65, 09, and 17. Press START to return to the title screen. At this point, hold (B) and press START to access the level select.

For Sonic 3, right after you hear "SEGA", but BEFORE Sonic appears, hit UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, UP, UP, UP, UP. At he title screen, press UP. This is the hardest of the codes to pull off, but it DOES work…

Q. On Sonic 3, how do I defeat the final boss?
This monstrosity is known as the Squeeze Tag Machine. The real problem with facing this guy is that the previous two bosses (Cannon Baller and Triple Score) may have cost Sonic his rings! Not to worry - it's easy when you know how. Wait in the centre of the screen and when Robotnik appears, jump at him, aiming for just above the arms and below the spikes. It also helps to implement a (until now) little-used gimmick - the Insta-Shield. This is executed by hitting the jump button again whilst in mid-air, and temporarily protects Sonic from harm. It can also be used to destroy Orbinauts without being damaged. When Robotnik sweeps across the bottom of the floor, simply stay on the opposite side of him by jumping across his dome. It is possible to get a cheeky hit in when he returns to the air, but it could cost you. From here he will repeat his pattern - easy stuff!
Q. How do I become Super Sonic?
In Sonic 2 and 3, you must first collect all the emeralds. Once this has been achieved, grab 50 rings then jump into the air, hitting the jump button again when airborne. You will transform into the fearsome Super Sonic!
Q. Any other hints for these classics?
Certainly.

On Sonic 1, there are a plethora of goodies hidden in the trees on the first zone. Leave no tree un-ransacked. Also, fragile walls are abundant both in this zone and the later Star Light area. Look out for slightly discoloured cliff faces.

Silver Sonic in Sonic 2 can be defeated easily if you have the correct technique. Simply run to the right hand side of his lair before he enters and stand just a few pixels to the left of his landing point. Face left and spindash. You will hit Silver four times before he can even get an attack in! When he starts to circle into a ball, dash left then jump over him as he dashes across. Then quickly execute a few more hits on him and voila - sorted.

The Launch Base zone in Sonic 3 contains a great - if long winded - way of getting vast amounts of lives. Simply go the first pair of klaxons. Walking into these will send a bird after you. Go into a spindash here and jam down the button with something (Perhaps a few copies of STC?) so that you remain in a destructive ball. Bird after bird will fly into you, and you'll rack up the points extremely quickly. Eventually, every bird destroyed will give you 10,000 points - and every five birds you destroy during this time will give you an extra life! Go and read a book or something, and check back every 8 or so minutes. Let time run out then start the process again until you have the number of lives you want!
